You Thought You’d Be Further Ahead by Now—So Why Aren’t You?
You thought you’d be further ahead by now.
You’ve been showing up.
Doing the work; and plenty of it.
Trying to live a Christ centered life.
And yet something still feels off, you just can’t shake the feeling that you’re not where you think you should be.
Not just in life—but in your faith too.
And it’s hard to explain. And you’re not alone - most people feel this at some point in their lives.
A few insights you’ll gain in this article:
Why this “behind” feeling doesn’t go away with more effort
What might actually be underneath it
How your faith fits into this in a real, practical way
A simple shift that can change how you experience growth
Why You Feel Behind in Life and Why it Doesn’t Go Away
Most people assume the answer is simple:
Try harder
Be more disciplined
Do more of the right things
We all know those things aren’t bad. But if they were the answer, this feeling would have gone away by now. So maybe the issue isn’t effort.
Maybe it’s something deeper than that.
FAQ
Q1: Why do I still feel behind?
A1: It’s possible to be walking with God and still feel this way. Often, it’s not about what you’re doing—it’s about what you’ve come to believe about yourself along the way.
What’s Really Underneath That “I’m Behind in Life” Feeling
A lot of people are trying to make their lives better, richer, fuller, but they’re doing it from a place of pressure.
“I should be further along by now.”
“I should be in a better place in life.”
“Shouldn’t I have figured this out by now?”
Those thoughts don’t usually show up loudly. They sit in the background eating away at you a little at a time. Unfortunately, they shape your life day after day.
And most days, it doesn’t feel dramatic. It just feels bland, or even empty.
You wake up, go through your day, get things done—but there’s no real sense of purpose.
Like you’re busy, but not actually getting anywhere.
Like you’re running on a treadmill that just never stops.
Sometimes it shows up as restlessness.
Sometimes as low-level frustration.
Sometimes though, it’s a quiet kind of emptiness that you can’t explain.
Nothing is obviously wrong. But nothing feels fully right either.
FAQ
Q1: Why do I feel stuck like this?
A1: Sometimes it’s not that you’re stuck—it’s that you’re trying to grow from a place of pressure instead of from something solid. And pressure might push you for a while, but it rarely leads to lasting change..
Q2: Will I always feel this way?
A2: No! Not if you decide you don't want to. I know that sounds simplistic, but it couldn’t be truer. And once you work through this feeling, life opens right up, and every day feels better.
Why This Behind Feeling Can Be So Heavy
Because it’s not actually about how much you’re doing to try to fix it. It’s about what’s underneath it. And this is the part most people miss.
You’re not lazy. You’re not; because if you’re reading this, it means you’re not just sitting back doing nothing, waiting for life to magically happen for you.
You’re not checked out either and you haven’t given up on your life.
You’re still trying. Frankly, you’re probably trying really hard. Maybe too hard. And that leaves you feeling exhausted, and it steals your hope & joy.
This is where it gets easy to feel like you’re:
pushing more than you’re actually moving
doing the right things, but it still just isn’t clicking
putting in effort without seeing the kind of change you hope for
just trying to keep your head above water - and what a juxtaposition given that you know others look at your life and think you live the blessed life
That disconnect can be exhausting. And over time, it can start to feel like “Maybe something’s wrong with me.” There’s nothing wrong with you! Too many people look back and see that this feeling stole years of joy, fun, stronger relationships, courage - too much.
What God Is Actually Doing in my Life?
He’s trying to help you see that His ways are better than the world’s ways. Because He has a bigger picture in mind for our lives than we do and He knows that we are way too attached to the things that the world values, rather than what He values.
Where we tend to focus on doing more, He tends to focus on “being more” - in other words, on being who you were created to be (note, I didn’t say “what” you were created to be).
“You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32)
More pressure won’t.
Being a high achiever won’t.
But truth will.
And not just truth in a general sense… But what’s actually true about you. If we can be real for a minute, let me ask you this question: if you really believed all the things God says are true about you, how would your life be different right now?
FAQ
Q1: Why do I feel like I’m failing?
A1: That feeling often comes from measuring yourself against expectations—either your own, what’s expected in our cultural, or what you think God expects. And sometimes those expectations aren’t actually true. Making this decision for yourself is where the real magic happens.
Q2: Why do I feel behind in life even when I’m trying so hard?
A2: Because effort and direction aren’t the same thing!
You can be doing a lot—showing up, working hard, trying to make life wonderful—but still feel behind if what’s driving you is pressure instead of something solid. Like having a vision for your life, that kind of something solid.
When everything is fuelled by “I should be further along by now,” it creates movement… but not the kind that actually settles anything inside you.
That’s why it can feel like you’re doing all the right things and still not getting where you hoped to be.
Q2: What does God say about who I am?
That’s something people often assume they already know—but haven’t really slowed down to explore. And that’s usually where clarity starts. He’s been telling you your whole life, maybe you just haven’t believed Him. Yet.
The Shift That Changes Everything
Instead of asking “What should I be doing?”
Try asking “What’s actually true about me right now?”
It seems like just semantics, but it’s not. Asking God what you should be doing sounds very faithful, but it’s not living as who you were created to be. And it also assumes that there is just 1 right path - but that’s often not the case with God.
But the second question changes the direction completely. Because if something you’re believing isn’t true - even if you’re doing everything right, things just aren’t going to work out the way you want, or the way you thought they should.
But when you start to come back to what’s true about you, that’s when things really start to settle into place.
How to Start (Without Overcomplicating It)
You don’t need to figure everything out at once.
You can start small:
1. Notice the pressure
Pay attention to thoughts like:
“I’m behind”
“I’m not enough”
“Do I even have what it takes?”
2. Pause and question it
Is this actually true?
Or does it just feel true?
3. Bring it to God
Even something as simple as:
“God, what’s true here?”
No pressure to get it perfect.
How to Hear what God is Saying in 3 Easy Steps
Quiet your spirit, you might do this with a couple worship songs then a minute or two of silence, or you might do it by lighting a candle and praying a Psalm. There are lots of ways to do this, so do whatever helps you connect with God.
Ask God a simple question like “God, what is true about _____”, or “God, what do you want me to know about _______”
Write down whatever you see, hear or sense. The key here is to NOT filter. Don’t filter anything. Nothing! It doesn’t matter how crazy it sounds, write it down. I remember the story of a friend who thought she heard/got the words “voice of truth”, which she wanted to ignore. But a couple days later when she heard the song by Casting Crowns on the radio after a very difficult phone call, she knew God was comforting and reassuring her.
You’re Not Behind—You’re Just Believing Something That Isn’t True
If you’ve been feeling behind, st’s almost certainly not because you’re doing too little.
It’s much more likely that you’ve been believing something about yourself that isn’t true.
And living from that belief will never feel true, or full, no matter how fine your life looks on the outside.
So instead of trying to fix your life, start by questioning the belief.
Because when that changes, everything else begins to follow. And yes, I mean EVERYTHING!
Final Thoughts
If you feel behind, it’s probably not because you’re doing too little.
You’re trying.
You’re showing up.
But this isn’t just about effort—it’s about what you’re believing.
And when that belief isn’t true, your life won’t have the peace & joy you long for… no matter how much you do.
So instead of pushing harder, try slowing down.
Pay attention to what’s underneath the feeling. You can find this by asking “What is it my system is responding to”, and drill down past the superficial answer to the deeper waters.
Because when that shifts, everything else follows.
A couple questions to ponder:
Where do you feel most behind right now?
And what are you believing about yourself there?
If you want to take this further, this is the kind of work we can explore together—helping you sort through what feels true vs. what actually is true.
